You Can't Sit Down fut d'abord un morceau instrumental enregistré en 1961 par le saxophoniste Phil Upchurch et son orchestre , avant de devenir deux ans plus tard une chanson des Dovells . Comme son titre l'indique, il s'agit d'une formidable incitation à danser, propre à électriser les ambiances les plus tièdes. On ne compte plus les reprises de ce titre depuis 40 ans et même le président Bill Clinton l'aurait joué lors de sa fête d'installation à la Maison Blanche.

Mais la version à mentionner impérativement, avant d'arriver à celle des Calamités (qui par la suite inspira celle des Asynchrones), est celle des Shangri-Las (en 1965), le groupe féminin new-yorkais qui restera dans l'histoire pour le tube planétaire Leader of the Pack .
