With A Boy Like You is a cover of With A Girl Like You, a song by the Troggs
released in 1966 (and adapted into French the same year by Johnny Hallyday
with the title "Le jeu que tu joues"). The Troggs themselves recorded on New Rose, the Calamités' label, and this song was covered by Alex Chilton
on the "Play New Rose For Me" compilation.
Les Calamités dropped an important element of the Troggs' version: the "pa-pa-pa-pa-pa" backing vocals after each verse. But they got inspired to use them in Malhabile and Vélomoteur.
This song had already been transformed into "With A Boy Like You" in 1971 by the British band Fable
. That feminine version was also to become an italo-dance hit in 1987 while interpreted by Chriss
, later to inspire the Danish techno cover by Tequila
in 1995.
With A Boy Like You
Original title: With A Girl Like You
Lyrics/Music: Reg Presley
As interpreted by Les Calamités
I'd want to spend my life with a boy like you
And do all the things that you want me to
But tonight I wanna have fun
And I think you'll be the one
Can I dance with you?
I tell by the way you dress that your soul's refined
And by the way you talk that you're just my kind
Boy why should it be that you don't notice me
Can't you dance with me?
Baby baby is there no chance
I can take you for the last dance
All night long yeah I've been waiting
Now there'll be no hesitating
So before this dance has reached the end
To you across the floor my love I send
I just hope and pray that I'll find a way to say
Can I dance with you?
