THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
1984 - Produced by Lionel Herrmani - Length: 2'01"
Discography: A bride abattue - Les Calamités - The Best of Rodney on the ROQ - C'est complet
The Kids Are Alright was originally recorded by
The Who
on 14th October 1965 at Pye Studios in London, during the same session as My Generation
. In 1979 a documentary film with the same title was devoted to the English group. This song has often been covered as a tribute, e.g. by Pearl Jam
. In 1984, the cover by Les Calamités reached California thanks
to the American release of their Album by Posh Boy. D.J. Rodney Bingenheimer, at KROQ radio station, just adored it and put it on a compilation of his favorites songs.
As in the case of With A Boy / Girl Like You, the lyrics were adapted to be sung by a woman: instead of saying" Better leave her behind with the kids, they're alright
" Les Calamités sang "Better leave him behind where the kids are alright" and talked about "him" instead of "her".
The resulting meaning is quite different: while The Who had no problem leaving their girlfriends with their buddies, Les Calamités thinked it was better to keep some distance with one's boyfriend every now and then, just to relax and avoid conflicts. A topic close to those of the later songs Pas la peine and Vélomoteur...
The Kids Are Alright
Lyrics/Music: Pete Townshend
Publisher: Fabulous Music
As interpreted by Les Calamités
I don't mind
Other girls dancing with my guy
That's fine, I know them all pretty well
But I know sometimes I must get out in the light
Better leave him behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright
Sometimes I feel I've gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I've gotta get away
Cause I know if I don't I'll go out of my mind
Better leave him behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright
I know if I go, things'll be a lot better for him
I had things planned but his folks wouldn't let him
I don't mind, other girls dancing with my guy
That's fine, I know them all pretty well
But I know sometimes I must get out in the light
Better leave him behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright
Sometimes I feel I've gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I've gotta get away
Cause I know if I don't I'll go out of my mind
Better leave him behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright
The kids are alright
The kids are alright
