REALLY SAYING SOMETHING
Interpreted on stage but never recorded by Les Calamités

The VelvettesReally Saying Something was entitled He Was Really Sayin' Something when it was interpreted for the first time by the Velvelettes . That girl band's story is little known, though it belonged to the first Motown's bands. It can be compared to the Calamités' in one way: they made a priority of their education and then their families instead of aiming at becoming stars. The girls from Michigan called themselves "Les Jolies Femmes" before they got their band name, because the singer, Cal Gill, studied French at high school.
This song was one of the band's only two hits. The Velvelettes never issued any album, implicitly confirming the idea that Motown invested more on songs than on artists.
In 1983 the famous British trio Bananarama made this (somehow shortened) title famous again by interpreting it together with Fun Boy Three. And in 2000 the two rapping Irish girls of Buffalo G made it We're Really Saying Something .

(He Was) Really Saying Something

Lyrics/Music: Norman Whitfield, Edward "Eddie" Holland Jr., Mickey (William) Stevenson
Publisher: Jobete Music Ltd.

Hey yeah yeah

I was walking down the street (doo waddy wah)
When this boy started following me (oh yeah)
Now I ignored all the things he said (doo wady wah)
He moved me in every way
With his collar unbuttoned
On my side he was strut'n'

He was really saying something (saying something)
Really saying something (saying something)
Bop bop shoo be doo wah
Bop bop shoo be doo wah

He flirted ev'ry step of the way (doo waddy wah)
I could hear ev'ry word he'd say (oh yeah)
My resistance was getting low (doo waddy wah)
And my feelings started to show
My heart started thumping
Blood pressure jumping

He was really saying something (saying something)
Really saying something (saying something)
Bop bop shoo be doo wah
Bop bop shoo be doo wah

He walked me to my door (doo waddy wah)
I agreed to see him once more (oh yeah)
Lady like it may not be (doo waddy wah)
But he moved me tremendously
Although he was bold
My heart he stole

He was really saying something (saying something)
Really saying something (saying something)
Bop bop shoo be doo wah
Bop bop shoo be doo wah

He was really saying something (saying something)
Really saying something (saying something)
