BOY FROM NEW YORK CITY
1984 - Produced by Lionel Herrmani  - Length: 3'19"
Discography: Pas la peine [12"] -  La vie en rose  - Les Calamités - C'est Complet

Boy From New York City was a hit by the Ad Libs in 1965. The way these girls talk about a boy (indeed from New York City) definitely sounds "60's".
But this song was also a Grammy Award rewarded hit by the vocal quartet Manhattan Transfer in 1981. Many bands used it to demonstrate their virtuosity, often without instrumental support.
To that extent the Calamités version was unfairly misunderstood - deemed poor if not barely serious. But that was missing the point: their recording is on the contrary so spontaneous and vivid that it is superior to the technically perfect but actually unsensitive interpretations.
To make it even clearer, the Calamités made a French adaptation of it, Le garçon de New York, to be found on the same EP.

Boy From new York City

Lyrics/Music: John Taylor, George Davis
Publisher: Trio Music

Ooo wah, ooo wah cool, cool kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City
Ooo wah, ooo wah come on kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City

He's kind of tall
He's really fine
Some day I hope to make him mine, all mine
And he's neat
And oh so sweet
And just the way he looked at me
He swept me off my feet
Ooo whee, you ought to come and see
How he walks
And how he talks

Ooo wah, ooo wah cool, cool kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City

He's really down
And he's no clown
He has the finest penthouse I've ever seen in town
And he's cute
In his mohair suit
And he keeps his pockets full of spending loot
Ooo whee, you ought to come and see
His dueling scar
His brand new car

Every time he says he loves me
Chills run down my spine
Every time he wants to kiss me
He makes me feel so fine
Ooo wah, ooo wah cool, cool kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City

Well he can dance
And make romance
That's when I fell in love
With just one glance

He was shy
And so was I
And now I know I'll never, ever say goodbye
Ooo whee, you ought to come and see
He's my most
From coast to coast

Ooo wah, ooo wah cool, cool kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City
Ooo wah, ooo wah c'mon kitty
Tell us about the boy from New York City
